Comments on David's article

Web2.0 is having very little impact on our school district. Any use of the Web2.0 tools is being initiated by the students not the staff. We shake our heads wishing our students would stay away from "it".

I firmly believe the majority of teachers in our District have no idea what Web 2.0 is; moreover, know how to use in the classroom. Some have an idea about it some aspects of it; however, (as I learned today) their understanding is misguided at best. Others could care less about it or any other technology. Our administrator is goes through the motions of encouraging technology but doesn't follow through very well.

This is my first encounter with Web2.0, so sad to say it has no impact on my students either. This will change!

The title "Square Peg, Round Hole?" is a very appropriate title for the state of schools and technology today. This is a super exciting time for education. We, as educators must take the ball and run with it or it will take off with out us and our students. This is the future our students will be a part of, whether or not we teach it to them. We need to embrace this new challenge!

I believe you are absolutely correct that most teachers do not know what Web 2.0 is. In fact, I believe that most technology coordinators may not have a good understanding of Web 2.0 and the possibilities for using these tools in the classroom.

Your comment that we as educators often hope that students won't push us in new technological directions also resonates. It takes time for digital immigrants to learn new tools and begin to use them. Educators need to find personal uses and meanings for these tools before we can think about how to effectively integrate them into our classrooms.

My hope is that during these five days we can all find two or three tools that we want to implement and that during this coming year everyone can experiment with classroom implementation. Hopefully others will see what you and your team are doing and your efforts will spark interest within your district. You provide awareness for your administrators & teaching staff; I'll work with the technology coordinators.
